Gifts that pay you back

Some of the most rewarding gifts let you care for veterans and their service dogs while still providing income for yourself or the people you love. Explore giving options that create a lasting impact for our mission, and may offer financial benefits to you along the way.

Charitable gift annuities

A charitable gift annuity lets you support a cause you love while receiving fixed payments for the rest of your life. It can appeal to donors who want to help pair veterans with life-changing service dogs while keeping their own financial security in mind.

Donors under 65 sometimes choose a Deferred Charitable Gift Annuity, where payments begin at a later age.

How it works

1. A donor transfers cash or securities to a charity
2. In return, the charity pays the donor (or up to two annuitants) a fixed income for life. The amount depends on the size of the gift and the age of the annuitants
3. When the contract ends, the remaining funds support the charity’s mission

Benefits

1. May provide an immediate income tax deduction for part of the gift.
2. Payments are fixed and predictable for life
3. Part of each payment is often tax free, making it more valuable than fully taxable income of the same size

Charitable remainder trusts

A charitable remainder trust lets you leave a lasting legacy for veterans and their service dogs while still receiving income for yourself or your loved ones. It is a popular way to make a significant gift without giving up the income your assets provide, and it may offer valuable tax benefits.

Who is this for

– Those who want to make a meaningful gift while keeping an income stream from their assets.
– Those holding appreciated assets, like stock or real estate, who want to reduce or eliminate capital gains taxes
– Those who want to provide income for themselves, a spouse, or other loved ones

Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust (CRAT)

Pays a fixed income based on the trust’s starting value. The income stays the same over time.

Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT)

Pays a variable income based on the trust’s value each year. If the assets grow, your income can grow too

How it works

1. Transfer assets such as cash, securities, or real estate into a trust managed by a trustee
2. The trust pays income to your chosen beneficiaries for a set number of years or for life
3. When the term ends, the remaining assets go to Austin Dog Alliance to support our mission

Benefits

1. Leave a lasting legacy that keeps pairing veterans with the service dogs that change their lives
2. Retain an income stream for yourself or your beneficiaries
3. Potentially reduce or eliminate capital gains taxes, and receive a deduction for the future gift to charity

Charitable lead trusts

A charitable lead trust lets you support veterans and their service dogs now, while passing assets to your family later, often with meaningful tax advantages for your heirs.

Who is this for

– Those who want to support our mission now while keeping some control over their assets during their lifetime
– Those who want to provide for family members after the charitable period ends
– Those with significant assets who want to reduce their estate tax liability

How it works

1. Create a trust and fund it with assets such as cash, securities, or real estate
2. The trust makes annual payments to Austin Dog Alliance for a set number of years
3. When the charitable period ends, the remaining assets pass to the beneficiaries you have named, such as your children

Benefits

1. Provide steady support for veterans and service dogs during the trust term
2. Provide for your family’s financial security afterward
3. Potentially reduce gift and estate taxes for your heirs
